Maintenance Schedule
6 Month Schedule
The follows needs to be completed by trained Service staff.
Strip down, clean working surfaces, inspect drive for fatigue issues and replace if needed. Test for drive traction issues and adjust if necessary. Lubricate drive motor shaft with food grade grease. Replace piston ring. Check for wear on nano coated head if incorrect baskets were used or a poor lower clamp set up caused wear.
The estimated time for this task is 1/2 hour.
At this point in time we estimate that wear might be reflected on the bronze gear connected to the drive motor.
Please insect for excessive wear on the teeth of the gear and any cracks on the adjacent motor or drive gear. Any of these signs indicate that it that part may need replacing.
We also suggest the piston ring around the tamp head is replaced as well as a clean of all moving parts and that the drive shaft is re-lubricated.
Parts and training are available, please contact us if you have any questions.
The Puqpress is extremely well engineered with no complex procedures involved. However, there is one area to pay close attention to when removing the lower fairing.
The switch cover is secured with secret clips and without method knowledge, it is most likely that the SMD Control card buttons will be broken off (can also be achieved during reassembly).
Currently, replacement SMD switches are not available and a new control board will need to be purchased.
12 Month Schedule
The follows needs to be completed by trained Service staff.
Strip down, clean working surfaces, inspect drive for fatigue issues and replace if needed. Test for drive traction issues and adjust if necessary. Lubricate drive motor shaft with food grade grease. Replace piston ring. Check for wear on nano coated head if incorrect baskets were used or a poor lower clamp set up caused wear.
The estimated time for this task is 1/2 hour.
18-24 Month Schedule
The follows needs to be completed by trained Service staff.
Strip down, clean working surfaces. Replace DC drive motor assembly if fatigue showing or as a preventative maintenance step in high-volume applications. Test for drive traction issues and adjust if necessary. Lubricate drive motor shaft with food grade grease. Replace piston ring. Check for wear on nano coated head if incorrect baskets were used or a poor lower clamp set up caused wear.
The estimated time for this task is 1 hour.
Recommended Maintenance Details
During The Baristas Workflow
If the gathering of the coffee grounds is not wiped off the Tamp head face, the build up will start to pull a noticeable divot out of the presented portafilter and effect the dosage extracted.
The coffee grounds can be wiped with a finger, a brush or a dry microfibre cloth and we recommend this as an inclusion to the barista workflow. (frequency will be site/environment/ grinder/coffee specific) and with practice (not hard) less than 5 seconds.
End of shift
At the completion of shift the cleaning process will require less than a minute activity.
Brush or wipe (easiest with a brush) the attracted coffee grinds from the work area of the Puqpress as well as any collected to the removable grounds tray.
Press the Cleaning button which is found as the lowest button included with the side display and has a brush icon next to it. This lowers the Tamp head slowly and stops at the end of the stroke.
(As a safety precaution, the Control card programming isolates any opportunity for the inductive proximity sensor to trigger movement of the mechanism.)
The display will flash “CL” for clean.
Use a brush or dry microfibre to clean the Tamp piston. When cleaned satisfactorily, Press the CL button again to return the Tamp head to work position.
When the “CL” stops flashing, the Puqpress is ready for work.
This is a simple process and requires the 4 mm Allen tool supplied with each Puqpress package. Instructions for this process can be found by clicking here.
Weekly (Or More Frequently In High Volume Cafes)
We also recommend that the Tamp head is removed and the ultra-fine coffee grounds cleaned from the collection dam designed into the top of the Tamp head/Piston and from the top of the cylinder.
1. CL button is pressed, the head comes down.
2. Turn the power off at the back and unplug from supply.
3. Remove the top cap.
4. Undo the locking bolt from the recess in the centre of the drive shaft with the 4mm Allen T bar tool.
5. Wind the Tamp head of the shaft by rotating it from left to right. Be ready to catch it
(The Tamp shaft is Left-hand threaded and if the locking bolt is not removed, removing the tamp head will re-engage threads and confuse disassembly)
6. Once the Tamp head has been released it will be noticed that there is a high-density plastic “Wear Ring” installed to a groove in the Tamping piston. This Wear Ring needs to be removed for cleaning and is robust. A brush is most effective.
7. Brush/wipe off the piston also direct cleaning activity to the internal area of the cylinder now accessible.
8. Reassemble.
When the power is switched on, the head will retract to Ready position automatically.
Important Note
If this process is not done, fine Coffee grounds will accumulate within the area above the piston and eventually prevent it from fully retracting.
Commissioning
The Puqpress requires a separate setup procedure for each location.
This is not so much a design flaw with Puqpress. It is an issue caused by the Group handle manufacturers.
The lower clamp needs to be adjusted to support underside of the portafilters.
It should be known, the Puqpress tamp result is most beneficial when the lower clamp adjustment holds the portafilter snugly against the upper clamp.
Most of the group handle manufacturing design up until recent has not included the consistency of external depth.
Currently, manufacturers are doing so, as they are aware of thermal mass consistency as well as other considerations like Nano coatings and modern CNC manufacturing.
The process of setting up the position is quite simple and (with some small experience) quick to do.
Unfortunately, it is necessary to find the biggest portafilter as the lower clamp is set in one position and adjusting it for the smallest will be a problem.
The method is included with technical training and there is also online MP4 available at our website for reference.
Setting up the Puqpress does not explicitly require the skillset of a highly qualified technician.
There is an important additional advantage with having the head barista complete the installation. The Puqpress, because of the consistent Tamp result, instantly highlights any setting, dosage or grind density discrepancy present in store.
To date, Puqpress has proven to be extremely reliable even when pushed well beyond the recommended Service interval.
Human intervention is the dominant issue cause. Put into the dishwasher, directing the steam wand into the top cover, dropping it onto the floor several times etc.
The Puqpress rapidly becomes a vital component to any coffee making enterprise.
